Fresh off a win against one of the Eastern Conference's elite teams, the Miami Heat get a chance to take down another.
Miami will try to snap a nine-game losing streak to Orlando on Friday night while the Magic go for their ninth straight victory at Amway Arena. The Heat (17-13) are looking for their sixth win in seven games following Tuesday's 104-95 victory over Cleveland. Miami lost to the Cavaliers 93-86 on Sunday.
"We weren't into a nice birthday present this time around for LeBron (James)," said Dwyane Wade, who had 36 points, 10 boards and nine assists in Miami's last win over Orlando - 110-100 on Feb. 15, 2006. "He got one the other night in Cleveland."
Wade, the NBA's scoring leader at 28.7 points per game, had 21 points and 12 assists on Tuesday, but tied a season low by shooting 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from the field.
The Heat are shooting just 43.4 percent from the floor in their last three games. Orlando, meanwhile, is third in the NBA in field goal defense at 42.5 percent.
Rookie Mario Chalmers and Daequan Cook shot a combined 11-of-14 from 3-point range on Tuesday as Miami finished a season-best 61.1 percent from beyond the arc. Chalmers, who hit a season-best six 3s in seven attempts, scored 21 points and matched a season high with eight assists. With no turnovers on Tuesday, Chalmers has 19 assists and just four turnovers in his last three games.
While Orlando has dominated Miami in recent matchups, the Magic have taken advantage of the absence of Wade in most of them. The Heat superstar has played in just four games in the nine-game losing streak against the Magic, including just two of the last seven meetings.
Dwight Howard, though, has started in all of Orlando's last nine games against Miami. He's posted eight straight double-doubles against the Heat, averaging 18.8 points and 13.8 rebounds in that span.
The fifth-year center notched his NBA-best 23rd double-double of the season on Wednesday with 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Magic (25-7) defeated Chicago 113-94. Orlando has won 16 of 19.
Howard, who leads the league with 13.8 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game, is averaging 15.0 points, 12.6 boards and 2.1 blocks since missing back-to-back games Dec. 13-15 with soreness in his left knee.
Miami will also have to find an answer for Rashard Lewis. The second-year Magic forward, who scored a team-leading 21 points against the Bulls, averaged 21.3 points and shot 44.5 percent from 3-point range as the Southeast Division-leading Magic won 12 of 15 in December.
"(Lewis has) been leading our team in scoring almost all this month," Howard said. "He and Jameer (Nelson) are the reasons why we've been winning a lot of games."
Nelson, averaging a career-best 16.5 points with 5.2 assists this season, is averaging 18.7 points and handing out 5.3 assists per contest since missing five games with a hip injury from Nov. 26-Dec. 3.
The Magic have won four straight home games against Miami.
