Johnson serves up 'Rules of the Road'
Monday night's Magic game in Los Angeles against the Clippers was not completed in time for this edition. For game coverage, go to OrlandoSentinel.com/sports.

LOS ANGELES -- A.J. Johnson has been with so many teams and been on the NBA road for so long that it all blurs together.

At 34, he's the oldest player on the Orlando Magic -- his seventh team.

He recently averaged more than 30 minutes per night during a five-game stretch, filling in for injured starting point guard Jameer Nelson.

The Magic finished 4-1 with Johnson as a starter, and he averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 assists. He scored 16 points against the Indiana Pacers and had 12 assists against the Washington Wizards.

Johnson figures following certain rules of the road throughout a career well into its 12th season has kept his body -- and mind -- in shape.

The Magic have headed out West to play five games, their longest trip of the season.

Johnson said he owes his longevity to some personal commandments. Here are A.J.'s Rules of the Road:

BE A HOMEBODY: Sounds contradictory, but A.J. says stay at home as much as you can on the road. His pre-game routine? "Night before I watch a lot of games, whether pro or college. I'm a Basketball junkie. I eat a lot of fruit, as much as possible. I'm a homebody, so I'm more into watching movies and as much Basketball as possible at the hotel."

PARTY'S OVER: Those days are long gone for A.J. "The guys that constantly want to be out all the time, they run themselves in the ground than the guys who take care of themselves," he said. "You need a balance of hanging out with friends on the road and getting the proper rest you need to play well. It's what's important to you. If drinking, hanging out and partying is important to you, then you aren't going to last long in this league."

REMEMBER WHAT MOMMA SAID: There's a time and a place for McDonald's and Taco Bell, but fast food will slow a fastbreak. "Stay away from the junk food as much as possible," he said. "Eat good, healthy meals even if you have to spend a little extra to go to the nicest restaurants. Drink as much water as possible."

LAUGH IT UP: It relieves stress, says A.J. A plane trip to the West Coast for the Magic is one long laughfest. "Five hours straight of jokes. We got eight guys auditioning for 'America's Next Top Comic.' Even if they think they're funny or not. It's personal, non-personal, just anything they can joke on, they'll do it," he said.

GET TRADED TO MARK CUBAN'S TEAM: Nothing better for your state of mind on the road. A.J. played for the billionaire's Dallas Mavericks during the 2006-07 season. "There's satellite on the plane to watch different channels, but the one thing that set Dallas apart: They treated you with a [hotel] suite if you had five years in the league," Johnson said. "So to have a suite at every stop, man, was awesome. That was one of the perks. Here it's the standard king room unless you pay for it."

ZZZZZZZZ: The travel is brutal, especially landing in the next city in the wee hours. So get your sleep. "As soon as I hit the bed, I'm good," A.J. said. "All my friends will tell you: I could sleep next to a dead man. I have no problem falling asleep."
