Now Davis is pushing himself

Now Davis is pushing himself
After dropping 22 points on the Magic in last night's 92-88 victory in Game 5, Glen Davis emerged from the showers and proceeded to drop some knowledge on the media surrounding his locker in the Celtics' dressing room.

``Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?'' Davis said.

``Tell 'em again,'' Stephon Marbury called out from an adjacent locker.

``When you have doubt . . .,'' Davis began, before he was interrupted and asked about the source of his quotation.

``It's all me,'' he said. ``This is me. You know, when you have so much doubt, it's just motivation. You turn it into motivation.''

Asked if he felt there were doubts about him when the Celtics lost Kevin Garnett before the playoffs and then Leon Powe during the first round against Chicago, Davis replied, ``I'm not saying a word. But you know. Everybody knows. We're just here to play Basketball.''

A sellout crowd of 18,624 watched Davis assert himself in the fourth quarter by scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, helping the Celtics rally from a 14-point deficit with 8:49 remaining.

When Davis sealed the verdict with a pair of foul shots with 4.6 seconds left, it seemed the perfect complement to his winning jump shot in Game 4 in Orlando.

``I thought Baby struggled for three quarters,'' said coach Doc Rivers. ``And then in the fourth quarter he made some shots. He made a couple off the dribble, but he made a couple of post plays. He just played big for us tonight, and timely big.''

Rivers had his concerns about that, especially after Davis brushed aside a 12-year-old Magic fan, Nicholas Provetti, Sunday night as he raced back toward the bench after making the winning basket. Provetti's father demanded an apology, then later backed off his demand, but Davis apologized anyway after yesterday's shootaround.

``I thought, you know, it's tough for a young guy - he makes a big shot and gets all that attention,'' Rivers said. ``You never know how he's going to handle it. And I don't know if he handled it great to start with. But then, after that, I thought once he got his legs under him and his head right, he was phenomenal.''

``It shows a lot of character for our team to go out there and have a clutch game,'' said Davis. ``You know, game-winning shot, then to come back home and [be] down [14], it just shows our character and our fight. That's what you call championship Basketball.''

Davis's confidence has to be overflowing after his offensive contributions in the last two games. For the series, he's averaging 15 points and 5.2 rebounds.

``I've grown tremendously, as you can see,'' Davis said. ``I was put in a situation where I didn't play as much and I had to sit and grow.

``I give a lot of credit to Doc Rivers. He's seen things in me that had to change. To this day, he's still on me.

``I've been trying to work hard and just tried to stay focused and maintain the position I'm in now.

``When Kevin went down, it was a great opportunity. All the hard work I had been putting in, it was a great opportunity where I can show the world I can play the game of Basketball and I can be a player in this league.''
