Orlando is once again shaping up like a team with a very strange habit: It plays better on the road than at home.
The Magic, who still look like contenders in the Eastern Conference, won a tough overtime game in Indianapolis on Friday night, then returned home Saturday and shot poorly during a loss to the Houston Rockets. Orlando was the only team in the NBA last season with a better record on the road than at home, and it could be the same once again. The Magic will go into Monday night's game against Milwaukee with a 5-3 record at home and a 4-1 record on the road.
One of the reasons for their away-from-home success could be that they are an especially close-knit group of players who bond well during road trips. They seem immune to many of the distractions that hurt most teams on the road. At home, they often look too relaxed when they go their separate ways.
The good news for the Magic is that after the Milwaukee game, they will have eight of the next 11 games away from home, including their first West Coast trip of the season. Earlier this season, the Magic swept a three-game road trip that started in Dallas and ended in Charlotte.
ROCKETS 100, MAGIC 95: The absence of Hedo Turkoglu, the foul trouble of Dwight Howard, and a poor shooting night was too much to overcome Saturday when the Magic lost at home to the Rockets. A night after a great game in Indianapolis, Howard struggled throughout the night trying to guard Rockets center Yao Ming. He played only 27 minutes, getting 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots, all numbers below his averages. The Magic shot just 40.7 percent from the field.
Rashard Lewis continued his up-and-down shooting stroke, making only six of 21 shots Saturday after hitting nine of 12 in that victory Friday against the Pacers.
"We got him some nice looks at the basket," coach Stan Van Gundy said, "but they just didn't fall."
