When the Big Guy struggles, it's now the Little Guy who carries the load. This is not a one-man show anymore.
Point guard Jameer Nelson, the smallest man in the lineup, led the Magic for the second consecutive game Thursday night, making sure the team could win without center Dwight Howard at the top of his game. When Howard missed his second consecutive game Monday, Nelson led the Magic to victory with 32 points. When Howard returned Thursday but struggled with foul trouble, Nelson again led the Magic to a victory over the San Antonio Spurs with 24 points and seven assists.
"Sometimes, things just go your way," Nelson said. "I've always been a confident player, but everyone has to step up when it's his turn."
Howard remains the centerpiece to the Magic's hopes this season, but it's encouraging that Nelson has become a big part of his supporting cast, proving he is more reliable than many believe.
"I'm always going to play with a swagger," Nelson said. "We all are. People just don't expect us to be there."
The Magic (20-6) return to action Saturday night against the Los Angeles Lakers, hoping to use that game as a barometer to measure their progress. They just returned from a good Western swing (4-1), and beat one of the league's most consistent teams. Now they will face the Lakers, the best in the West.
MAGIC 90, SPURS 78: The return of center Dwight Howard was a big relief for the Magic, but it was Jameer Nelson who carried the load with a big second half that secured the victory. Nelson had 24 points.
Howard had 14 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots. Howard had missed the last two games with a left knee injury that had everyone around the franchise a little uneasy because he had been so durable since coming into the league.
