The Magic are trying to flirt with uncharted territory.
No longer considered a team that just wants to be a contender, the Magic have become one, on course to hit the vaunted 60-victory mark this season, matching the franchise high that was set in 1996. The Magic (24-6) matched their best 30-game start with a victory in Minnesota on Saturday night. They also started with the same record in both the 1994-95 season and the 1995-96 season, when they reached the NBA Finals and the Eastern Conference finals, respectively.
The Magic are on a roll now, winning 11 of their last 12 games and seven consecutive games, doing it with the inside power of Dwight Howard and the outside shooting of everyone else.
"I've never understood people saying you're peaking too soon," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I don't understand why you can't play well all year and play well into the playoffs. That's what the better teams always have done."
The Magic lost their first two games of the season, but they have been very good ever since, considerably better than last season, when they won 52 games and reached the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 12 years.
MAGIC 118, TIMBERWOLVES 94: Getting the kind of balance that will make them tough to stop in the future, the Magic rolled to another easy victory Saturday night. They scored 65 points in the second half after struggling through the first two periods. Hedo Turkoglu had 26 points. Rashard Lewis followed with 24, while Jameer Nelson and Dwight Howard had 20 and 17, respectively.
The Magic hit 12 of 24 from 3-point range.
