Orlando Magic Getting Inside 2009-10-19

Orlando Magic Getting Inside 2009-10-19After the Magic reached the NBA Finals last season, the safest and arguably best move, would have been to bring back the same team with some slight tweaking, improving by the natural maturation process of a young nucleus.

That wasn't good enough for general manager Otis Smith.

"If you stand still in this league, you're going backward," Smith reasoned. "We want to win a championship."

Instead of re-signing free agent Hedo Turkoglu (and letting him go to Toronto), the Magic replaced him with Vince Carter, giving up three players (two starters) to get him in trade from New Jersey.

They also added forwards Matt Barnes, Brandon Bass, and Ryan Anderson, along with point guard Jason Williams, gambling that they can be deeper and better without upsetting the delicate chemistry that produced their greatest season in franchise history. "It's going to take some time to get everyone on the same page, but it's a long season," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We're still the same type of team. Hopefully, we'll be better."

The Magic will still revolve around All-Star center Dwight Howard, surrounding him with good shooters at almost every position to provide an inside-outside attack.

Howard, already the All-NBA First Team center and Defensive Player of the Year, expects to be better. So does point guard Jameer Nelson, who missed the second half of the season after shoulder surgery. Nelson's return prompted the Magic to trade Rafer Alston to New Jersey after he carried the lion's share of point guard minutes into the playoffs.

Carter is expected to do what Turkoglu often did -- and do it even better -- by handling the offense during key, late-game possessions. Carter, an eight-time All-Star, is more of a scorer than Turkoglu was, but his ability to create for others has been questioned in the past.

The Magic may struggle to start the season, losing All-Star Rashard Lewis to a 10-game suspension for violating the NBA's anti-drug agreement. In his absence, the Magic likely will start Nelson, Carter, Howard, Bass, and Michael Pietrus on opening night.

COACHING STAFF: Head Coach -- Stan Van Gundy, 5th year overall, 3rd with Magic (111-53). Assistants -- Brendan Malone, Patrick Ewing, Steve Clifford, Bob Beyer.

LAST SEASON REMEMBERED: 59-23 (1st In Southeast Division), beating Philadelphia, Boston and Cleveland in the playoffs before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers, 4-2, in the NBA Finals.

THIS SEASON, PREDICTED: 57-25 (1st In Southeast Division), losing to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference final.

POSSIBLE CHANGES, PREDICTED: Backup center Marcin Gortat could be traded before the deadline. The Magic kept him this summer by matching an offer sheet he received from Dallas, but they really don't want to be paying $5 million annually for a backup center who rarely plays behind Howard. They kept him because they believe one of the teams in need of a center will offer something significant in return. What they start looking for will depend on how all the new additions fit in around Howard.
