Orlando Magic Getting Inside 2009-11-01

The Magic have been bragging throughout preseason about having the deepest team in franchise history. They are going to get the chance quickly this season to prove it.

With Vince Carter expected to miss at least one game with his sprained left ankle, J.J. Redick will move into the starting lineup Sunday against Toronto, joining Ryan Anderson, who already is replacing Rashard Lewis. Anderson, who came to Orlando with Carter in the trade with New Jersey, has scored 16 points in each of his first two starts. He has looked better than anyone expected. Anderson will get more starting assignments because of the 10-game suspension Lewis received for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Redick, expected to be Carter's backup, has been struggling to carve his niche in the NBA after a stellar college career. He had 12 points in Friday's victory over New Jersey after Carter left the game.

In the first two games, the Magic also have been happy with backup forward Brandon Bass and backup point guard Jason Williams. They also will have Matt Barnes and Marcin Gortat coming off the bench in Toronto. The Raptors will be a tough test, especially with Hedo Turkoglu primed for the game. Turkoglu left Orlando as a free agent this summer after the Magic decided against offering him a competitive long-term contract.

MAGIC 95, NETS 85: Center Dwight Howard had 20 points, 22 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Magic past the Nets. Howard did as he pleased throughout the game with the Magic dominating from start to finish. Vince Carter had 16 points in 15 minutes before leaving in the second period with a sprained left ankle. Ryan Anderson, starting in place of Rashard Lewis, had 16 points.
