It looks as if winning on the road once again will be a trademark of this Orlando team. The Magic will play Sunday afternoon in Toronto, confident as ever about winning away from home. Since Stan Van Gundy became coach of the Magic before the 2007-08 season, the Magic have compiled a 58-30 road record. Last season they had the second-most road victories in the league (27), trailing only the Los Angeles Lakers. They are coming off a convincing victory Friday night at Boston, where they beat the Celtics 83-78 after leading almost the entire game. It wasn't easy, but it was indicative of the Magic's mental toughness under Van Gundy. They are 4-2 this season on the road.
A big factor is the presence of center Dwight Howard, who seems to control the lane against any team in the league.
The Magic already have beaten the Raptors in Toronto this season and are getting an unusual second trip to Toronto in the opening month of the season. It will be another opportunity for Toronto forward Hedo Turkoglu to show the Magic what they are missing. Turkoglu was a big factor in the Magic reaching the NBA Finals last season, but he left as a free agent when the Magic didn't make a competitive offer.
Turklogu had 19 points and four assists in the first meeting, but the Raptors still lost by nine points. The Magic won despite playing without Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis.
MAGIC 87, CELTICS 78: Vince Carter showed in a big game why the Magic traded for him this summer, leading them to a convincing victory over the Celtics. Carter had 26 points, getting shots whenever he wanted. Rashard Lewis had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Dwight Howard had trouble getting the ball and scored just nine points. The Celtics, who lost to the Magic in the conference semifinals last spring, were hoping for some revenge Friday night.
