The possibility of a 60-victory season is beginning to look more realistic.
The Magic (38-12) have only Denver Wednesday night before the All-Star break, inching closer to Boston and Cleveland for the best record in the Eastern Conference. They also are ahead of the 1995-96 Magic team that finished with the franchise record 60 wins. That team lost in the conference finals to the Chicago Bulls.
"We're not satisfied with what we have now. We want to get better," said center Dwight Howard. "The thing is, we have room to get better."
The Magic have won two of three since losing starting point guard and All-Star Jameer Nelson, likely for the season with a dislocated right shoulder that will require surgery.
With Howard still leading the league in rebounding and blocked shots, both Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu playing well at his side, the Magic have been rolling through their schedule, already looking forward to playoff possibilities. They had no problem bouncing back from a loss Friday night in Indiana.
"They are built in a championship-caliber way," assessed New Jersey Nets coach Lawrence Frank. "It's why they have one of the best records in the league. They are very, very good."
MAGIC 101, NETS 84: Great games are becoming almost ho-hum for center Dwight Howard, who had 30 points and 16 rebounds Sunday night. Howard led the Magic to another easy victory over the outmatched Nets, then talked about all the things he needs to do better for the Magic to improve. Mickael Pietrus had 17 points, Hedo Turkoglu 15 and Richard Lewis 14. The Nets were without Vince Carter, which made things easier on the perimeter, but Howard didn't need much help around the basket as he dominated from start to finish.
