MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: C Dwight Howard, despite a disappointing end to the season, emerged as the best center in the NBA. He became an All-Star starter for the first time, and he was named to the All-NBA First Team for the first time. He led the league in rebounding and in double-doubles. He also had eight games of at least 20 points and 20 rebounds. MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: The Magic got nothing this season out of G J.J. Redick, who expected to be a regular contributor in his second NBA season. Redick is immensely popular in Orlando, but Coach Stan Van Gundy hardly used him, preferring to use Maurice Evans and Keith Bogans at shooting guard.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: Staring G Maurice Evans, combo G Keyon Dooling and backup point guard Carlos Arroyo all become unrestricted free agents this summer.
Evans, obtained in a mid-season trade with the Lakers, is hoping to triple his $1.5 million salary from this season now that he is a starter. The Magic may let him go if they can find someone better. Dooling is well liked by Van Gundy for his versatility and is the most likely of the three to return. Arroyo fell out of favor late in the season and he is expected to leave unless he wants to settle for the league minimum. Backup C Adonal Foyle has an option on another year of his contract, and he may opt out after not getting to play in the postseason.
PLAYER NOTES:
--G J.J. Redick didn't back away from earlier comments that he wants to be traded unless the Magic can find a way for him to play. He thought this would have been his season, but Van Gundy didn't like his game. The Magic may trade him on draft night, unless they trade Bogans instead or let Evans leave as a free agent.
--C Dwight Howard became the youngest player in league history to reach 4,000 rebounds in his career. He has 4,014 in his four seasons and he's only 22. He also became the first player since Wilt Chamberlain to record three 20/20s during a playoff series. He did that against Toronto in the first round.
--C Marcin Gortat played in only six games during the regular season even though he was healthy all year, but he played in eight playoff games when the Magic finally realized he might be able to help them. It was the strangest handling of a young Magic player in years.
